Odisha youngsters Debashis Das and Saina Salonika won a bronze medal each in the World Youth Chess Championship that concluded at Caldas Novas in Brazil today. International Master Das finished third in the under-18 open category, scoring seven points with the help of five wins and four draws.
In the nine-round competition, he forced Grandmasters Vladimir Fedoseev (Russia) and Ter-Sahakyan Samvel (Armenia) to draws in the fifth and last round respectively. Bhubaneswar child Saina claimed the bronze in the under-8 girls` category with 6.5 points in her kitty. She won five games, lost two and drew one in the process.
Among other Odisha players, Rutumbara Bidhar finished 8th with 6.5 points in the under-10 girls` group, while Rakesh Kumar Jena ended 5th with seven points in under-10 open category. India bagged a total of five medals in the championship which included one gold, one silver and three bronze.
